Whats to say im downloading the next top 40 or having a skype video chat?
Streaming a podcast or downloading the next James Bond film, Playing WOW or downloading a new distro via a tracker?
My knowlegde of networking is a bit limited but surely a packet is just a packet untill it can be recreated at the client's machine. How can they tell what data is inside what packet?

Hmm I'm probably less clued up than you re.networking; so I'll pass on that one: I do know that they know what type of communications protocol you're using: Such as POP3, SMTP, FTP, P2P etc. (At least BT do.) How they know I have very little idea. I think that different protocols are structured in different way, using different layers, etc. I won't try and get all techy here as I'll only make myself look stupid.

If there are any geeks who know more about this I'd be interested if you'd follow up this comment and share it with us.
